September 16th marks the day of the female
condom. This day is to create and increase awareness on the access to the use
of female condom and as well as break the barriers surrounding the access to
the female condom.
Adolescents and young people especially girls
and women have the need to improve their sexual health and also, they have the
rights to make choices of which method of contraceptives and which method of
protection they prefer and suitable for them.
In order to prevent HIV, girls and women
should be able to have access to the use of protection irrespective of their
age, social class and sexual orientation. Because girls and women also have
sexual and reproductive health issues, it is crucial to include girls and young
women in the preventive measures against STIs because girls and women most
times suffer the I'll effects and consequences of unwanted pregnancy, unsafe
abortion, sexually transmitted infections including HIV and also death. That is
why the female condom is used as closing the gap in the unmet need for
contraception, the female condom also serves as a dual protection which means
it can prevent against STIs and unwanted pregnancies, then it should be made
readily and easily available and accessible to young people especially girls
and young women.
There have been barriers in accessing
sexual reproductive health services and that is why the global female condom
day aims to increase awareness for young people on their rights to have access
to sexual Reproductive health services. Also, CWIDI is using this medium to
educate young people on important of correct and consistent use of condom. Also
conducting outreaches in Gwagwalada, providing young people with information on
